Beacon House Youth Development & Non-Profit Management Intern (Unpaid)

Location: Washington, D.C. (Hybrid or In-Person)
Time Commitment: Minimum 10 hours/week (flexible scheduling)

About Beacon House

Beacon House is a community-based nonprofit organization located in the Edgewood neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Our mission is to provide children in under-resourced communities with the support they need to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. Through our academic enrichment, mentoring, athletic, and youth development programs, we are committed to building brighter futures for the students and families we serve.

Position Overview

This internship is designed for individuals passionate about education equity, youth development, and the inner workings of nonprofit organizations. Interns will gain hands-on experience supporting program development, implementation, and nonprofit operations while making a direct impact on the lives of children and teens in our community.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and implementation of youth programming.
  • Support Youth Development Mentors (YDMs) with activity setup, student engagement, and classroom management
  • Help collect and organize student attendance and program data for reporting purposes
  • Contribute to program planning meetings and support with special projects or events
  • Assist with volunteer coordination, family engagement efforts, and community partnerships
  • Provide administrative support related to communications, scheduling, and program materials
  • Shadow nonprofit leadership meetings to gain exposure to strategy, fundraising, and operations

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in or recently completed an undergraduate or graduate program (Education, Social Work, Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, or related fields preferred)
  • Interest in youth development, education, or community-based work
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Reliable, self-motivated, and willing to take initiative
  • Experience working with youth or in a nonprofit setting is a plus, but not required
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams and community members

Education Program Volunteer Tutor (Grades K-12) for 25-26SY

Commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week for at least 8 weeks

Overview:
Beacon House DC is seeking dedicated Volunteer Tutors to support students in grades K-8 with homework, general studies or specialized subjects such as literacy and math. Tutors will work one-on-one or in small groups to reinforce classroom learning, build foundational skills, and foster a love for learning.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic support in general subjects or focus on literacy and/or math
  • Engage students in meaningful, skill-building activities
  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet students’ learning needs
  • Maintain a positive and encouraging learning environment
  • Communicate progress and challenges to Beacon House staff

Qualifications:

  • Passion for education and youth development
  • Experience working with children (preferred but not required)
  • Strong skills in literacy and/or math (if tutoring in a specialized subject)
  • Reliable, patient, and enthusiastic about helping students succeed

Commitment:

Education Program Volunteer Mentor (Grades 5-12) for 25-26SY

Commitment: Two (30 – 45 min) mentoring sessions per week & one Saturday per month for at least 8 weeks 

Overview:
Beacon House DC is looking for Volunteer Mentors to support students in grades 5-12 by providing guidance, encouragement, and positive role modeling. Mentors will work with up to two students, fostering personal growth, leadership skills, and academic motivation through consistent engagement.

Responsibilities:

  • Build meaningful relationships with up to two mentees
  • Meet twice a week for mentoring sessions (virtual or in-person)
  • Participate in at least one Saturday session per month, including field trips
  • Provide social, emotional, and academic encouragement
  • Serve as a trusted role model and advocate for student success

Qualifications:

  • Passion for youth mentorship and development
  • Strong communication and listening skills
  • Commitment to consistency and reliability
  • Ability to create a safe, supportive, and inspiring space for students

Commitment:

Youth Development Mentor (YDM) – Spark Lab (Grades 3 and 4)

Part-Time | 3:00 pm – 6:30pm Mon, Tues, Thurs, Friday; 2:30pm – 6:30pm Wed. | Beacon House DC

Spark Lab:
Spark Lab is Beacon House’s 2nd–4th grade Homework Lab & Academic Enrichment program. It provides a structured yet engaging environment where students build confidence, strengthen academic skills, and foster a love for learning. The program combines focused homework support with interactive learning activities that reinforce core subjects through hands-on exploration and creative expression.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support students in completing homework assignments accurately and independently during designated Homework Lab time.
  • Facilitate engaging academic enrichment activities, including games, projects, and collaborative learning tasks aligned with math, reading, and science content.
  • Facilitate along with volunteer tutors, one-on-one and small group tutoring for students needing additional academic support or enrichment.
  • Cultivate a warm, welcoming, and structured environment that supports student independence, growth, and curiosity.
  • Implement behavior management strategies aligned with program norms and support students in developing positive learning habits.
  • Track student attendance and progress; communicate with the Education Programs Manager about any concerns or successes.
  • Prepare instructional materials, manage classroom routines, and contribute to a smooth program flow.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience working with elementary-aged children (grades 2–4).
  • Strong foundational knowledge in math and literacy content.
  • Ability to lead structured academic activities in a fun, student-centered way.
  • Patient, dependable, and excited to help students grow academically and socially.
  • Passion for education, youth development, and equitable learning experiences.

 

Youth Development Mentor (YDM) – Gateway to Glow Up Academy (Grade 5)

Part-Time | 3:00pm – 6:30pm Mon, Tues, Thurs, Friday | Beacon House DC

About Gateway to Glow Up Academy:
Gateway to Glow Up Academy is a high-impact transitional program designed to support 5th-grade students as they prepare for the academic, social, and emotional shifts of middle school. The program blends mentorship, structured academic support, and hands-on activities to build executive functioning skills, boost student confidence, and foster a mindset for success.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate daily sessions focused on executive functioning skills such as organization, time management, and goal setting.
  • Guide students through academic strategies including Cornell Notes, study techniques, and classroom readiness skills.
  • Lead engaging activities that promote confidence in public speaking, collaboration, and problem-solving.
  • Foster a safe and supportive environment for students to build peer relationships and connect with mentors.
  • Model and encourage self-reflection, resilience, and a growth mindset in all learning experiences.
  • Track attendance, student participation, and growth; share insights with the Education Programs Manager and program team.
  • Collaborate with staff to adapt programming to meet student needs and maintain a consistent, structured flow.

Ideal Candidate:

  • Experience working with upper elementary students (preferably 4th–6th grade).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to mentor pre-teens in academic and social-emotional growth.
  • Organized, proactive, and enthusiastic about youth development.
